Soccer

* Chattanooga Red Wolves goalkeeper Alex Mangels was named the USL League One player of the week for his part in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over the Greenville Triumph. Outshot 14-4, the Red Wolves received stellar play from the league leader in saves, who added four to his total. Mangels’ third clean sheet of the season pushed Chattanooga into a tie for third place in the league standings.

Football

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga begins today to sell tickets to the football Mocs’ Sept. 14 game at Tennessee. Those tickets are available to Mocs Club members and UTC season-ticket holders at limits of four per person (or six or eight for club members at $1,500 or $2,500 giving levels). All orders for the UTC section that day at Neyland Stadium must be received by 5 p.m. on July 1. Other UTC away-game tickets go on sale Aug. 1. Call 266-MOCS for more information or to make a purchase.

Running

* UTC cross country and track runner Abby Bateman was selected Google Cloud academic all-district by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Having just finished her junior year as a business marketing major, she has a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and she was All-Southern Conference in indoor track as part of the Mocs’ distance medley relay. She had nine top-10 finishes in the two 2018-19 track seasons, with one 800-meter victory. The Mocs were an all-academic team as recognized by the national track and cross country coaches association with a collective 3.8, tied for second in Division I with Alabama.

* Juan Villanueva from Central High School in Harrison signed Tuesday afternoon to run cross country for Cleveland State this season. He’s the Cougars’ sixth offseason addition. “We are excited to add another runner to our men’s team,” Cougars coach David Kyle said in a Cleveland State release. “We have a very good men’s class coming in, and I believe Juan will contribute to the success we will show next season. Juan is a fine young man.”
