As the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is commemorated this week, the UTC Performing Arts Series will present LA Theatre Works’ “The Mountaintop.”
What actually happened inside Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis is unknown. But in this internationally acclaimed play, author Katori Hall imagines what may have happened in the overnight hours between the civil rights leader and a seemingly inconsequential hotel maid.
“The Mountaintop” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St.
Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play, “The Mountaintop” is filled with humor and political jabs, while giving audiences a glimpse of the human side of King – his hopes, regrets and fears.
“The Mountaintop” premiered in London in 2009, then ran on Broadway starring Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson.
Tickets are $30, $25 for senior adults and $15 for students. Order them online at www.utc.edu/fine-arts-center or call 423-425-4269.
