Entering tonight’s Region 3-AA tournament, there’s a little extra sense of accomplishment with the Central girls’ basketball team.
For four seasons, the Lady Pounders were in a four-team district in Class AAA. As a result, the District 6-AAA tournament essentially was nothing more than a seeding event for the region tournament, as all four teams automatically advanced.
Reclassification moved Central to District 6-AA, which includes eight teams. To advance to the region tournament, the Lady Pounders had to win a postseason game.
The Lady Pounders (8-16) did just that, upsetting third-seeded East Hamilton 42-38.
“We just felt better about ourselves,” senior guard Tempie Brown said. “We were able to earn a spot in the region; we had to beat somebody to go where we wanted to go. We just looked at it as a new season; both teams were 0-0. We felt that we were evenly matched — if not better.
