Commissioners ask about school security

Hamilton County commissioners have asked what needs to be done to stop burglaries at county schools.

Dr. Jim Scales, superintendent of Hamilton County schools, told commissioners Thursday that property had been stolen from a number of schools in the past 18 months. There were two recent break-ins at Howard School of Academics and Technology.

“It is ridiculous that we have this happening to us,” Dr. Scales said. “I personally feel like some of this could be (an) inside (job).”

On Jan. 6 and Jan. 11 someone entered Howard school, on one occasion through an unlocked window. Seven Apple iMac computers and 22 Dell laptops were stolen in the incidents, police said.

District 1 Commissioner Fred Skillern recommended the schools look at additional security systems for technology rooms or computer labs where valuable items are stored.

County Mayor Claude Ramsey told Dr. Scales that offering a reward for information related to the burglaries might help.
