Running of the Chihuahuas is Thursday

WDOD-FM Hits 96 will celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Thursday with the fourth annual Running of the Chihuahuas. Events begin at 5 p.m at First Tennessee Pavilion.

Last year, more than 1,000 revelers witnessed the crowning of the fastest Chihuahua in Chattanooga.

Because of the large turnout, this year’s race will feature new twists, including double elimination for the 96 Chihuahuas that can race.

“Double elimination allows each dog to race twice and gives spectators what they want – more racing,” said event organizer and afternoon personality Brad Steiner. “My dream of one day holding it at Bristol Motor Speedway is getting closer to reality.”

The winning racer get its weight in prizes, and owners and spectators can expect to win prizes every half hour.

“Thanks to the support of the community, this event is growing more than we ever expected,” said station manager Danny Howard. “Local sponsors are seeing the possibilities and are adding their name to the event, which makes its impact that much bigger.” This year’s race is presented by Corona.

Registration is open at www.hits96.com.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.

A performance by Hot Chelle Rae will follow the races.
