Smokies road construction taking longer than planned

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Some road construction in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will continue deeper into the summer tourist season because of a severe winter and contract delays.

A news release from the National Park Service said Clingman’s Dome Road is set to reopen June 19, but there will still be paving work on the lower three miles of it through July 2. There will be a flag crew alternating traffic flow over one lane around the paving work.

No date is yet set for reopening the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which had been scheduled to occur on May 28.

The rebuilding of Cades Cove Loop Road has been completed. Repaving of Newfound Gap Road between Collins Creek Picnic Area and Cherokee, N.C., will continue into January.

Visitors can check the status of trailhead and campground paving on the Smokies’ website, www.nps.gov/grsm.
