‘Dysfunctional’ Congress?

Some polls indicate that a great many of our people believe our present Congress is “dysfunctional.”

Since the 435 members of the House of Representatives and the 100 members of the Senate are elected by the people in 50 states, with varied situations and different interests, it is understandable for there to be diversity of opinions, principles and politics among the members of Congress.

We hope Congress will consider all kinds of proposals, debate them and then come to wise majority decisions.

But today, members of Congress are strongly divided on many issues. Isn’t it better for Congress to be “dysfunctional,” and not make quick majority decisions, than to be well-oiled and smoothly acting in concert to do many “wrong things”?

All that is needed to prove that Congress is currently irresponsible is to look at its financial actions. Although Congress is taxing the people too much, it is spending more than a trillion dollars a year — year after year — more than it is taking in from taxes. Is that responsible? Is that good for the people and the nation?
