LaFayette moves forward with water main project

LaFayette officials are trying to clean up the city. The City Council recently discussed property maintenance — or, rather, the lack of it in some instances.“We condemned a trailer park some time ago. It is Pear Pine Trailer Park on the north end [of the city], on the corner of Highway 27 and Jessie Drive, next to Jackson Realty and the Mexican restaurant,” City Manager David Hamilton reported. “The trailers were in terrible shape and unlivable. They have removed 17 of the 26 trailers so far. We are trying to clean up properties in the city.”

The LaFayette City Council recently approved Phase III of the Chattanooga Street water line replacement.

“We are about 75 percent complete with Phase II,” said LaFayette City Manager David Hamilton. “Phase I – the water line from Henderson Street to West Main – is complete. Phase II is from West Main to McLemore Street. The council voted to approve Phase III that continues from McLemore to Shattuck Industrial Boulevard. We’ve put in a new water main and replaced services.”

While the $250,000 total cost is coming from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, according to Hamilton, the city spent $106,020 on two mini excavators for the project.

“By doing the work ourselves, the exciting part is we saved a million dollars,” he said. “With a contractor it would have cost $1.2 million.

“We are using mini excavators to dig up the water line and make repairs. We are extending gas lines south of town too, so we will use the mini excavators daily.”

Hamilton expects Phase III of the water line replacement to be done by September.
