Mocs play strong in first half

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Mocs are turning John Shulman’s principles of defending and rebounding into a truth, an axiom.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga leads Georgia Southern 40-29 at halftime in a first-round game of the Southern Conference tournament in Bojangles Coliseum.

The Mocs are out-rebounding the Eagles 31-10 and have limited GSU to 10-of-31 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

UTC forwards Ridge McKeither and Chris Early have been physically dominant. McKeither had 11 points and seven rebounds before picking up his second foul.

Early has eight points and nine rebounds. Colby Wohleb leads the Eagles with nine points, all on 3-pointers.

UTC’s dominance on the glass has countered their 12 first-half turnovers.

Ty Patterson and GSU guard Mario Hanson were given a double-technical for jawing at each other a few seconds after officials stopped play to improve sportsmanship.
