Fond memories of the past are fading fast

Do you remember not needing a door key? Remember during summer when windows were open and window fans were in some windows? Summer vacation from school was just that. No homework. Summer vacation was from the last week of May until the day after Labor Day.

Dial telephones were black most of the time. Most TVs were black and white.

Remember Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo, “Circle 3 Ranch” and “Funtime”?

Remember cloth diapers in a diaper pail, waiting for diaper service to pick them up? Remember wringer washers and number 3 rinse tubs? Kool-Aid was a nickel. Candy bars, except for big Baby Ruths and Butterfingers, were a dime.

Remember trading funny books, playing marbles, paper dolls, jacks, house, cowboys, “May I,” red light, red rover, “Farmer and the Dell” and cops and robbers?

Remember when schools and others had respect for the Bible? These are just a few memories some have forgotten.

Vote for Shekari is a vote for hope

Melody Shekari is an outstanding candidate for the Tennessee House of Representatives (District 28). A proud daughter of immigrants, she was raised in Chattanooga. Having watched her parents work hard to become degreed professionals, she worked hard to become a lawyer certified in two states.

I have known Melody since she was a 5-year-old who played with my children. One summer, we organized a summer school at my house. All the children loved it. After finishing her college studies outside Tennessee, Melody returned to Chattanooga to work with the mayor’s office and community here. In 2016, she ran as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress from Tennessee’s 3rd District.

While supporting criminal justice reform, improved public education, job creation and workforce development, Melody learned to stand up to the powerful and supported people in need. She wants better schools for our children and higher-paying jobs for their parents, with family benefits including affordable health care.

Melody is focused on rekindling a sense of community, civic responsibility and respect among us. A vote for Melody is a vote for you and your family – a vote for hope.

Cook right, then wrong on Trump

In his Sunday commentary, “Stop Comparing Trump to Hitler,” David Cook makes a valid and important point. Not only is the comparison unfair and inaccurate, it is destructive and dangerous, and he explains why. Unfortunately, he then goes on to make inaccurate and unfair comparisons of Trump to Andrew Jackson and Franklin Roosevelt. Trump has never proposed the forced movement of Americans off their land, as Jackson did to the Cherokee and other Southern tribes, nor has he proposed incarcerating law-abiding American citizens in camps, as Roosevelt did to Americans of Japanese ancestry.

Worse, he then goes on to compare the millions of Americans who voted for Trump to Germans who voted Hitler into power: “Because the Holocaust didn’t happen solely because of Hitler. It happened because ordinary Germans fell under his spell, thus allowing Nazism to flourish.” What hypocrisy! Cook may think Trump’s policies on tariffs, trade, taxes, regulation, border security, etc., are misguided – I don’t agree with many things he has done – but to compare his supporters to Hitler’s supporters is an offensive lie. Cook should be ashamed, and I say that as someone who did not vote for Trump.
