Hamilton County Schools Interim Superintendent Kirk Kelly is interviewing today for the permanent post.

Kelly is the last of five finalists to interview for the superintendent position this week, and the board plans to vote on the district’s next leader June 15. Five of its nine members need to agree on a finalist for the decision to be made.

Kelly will meet this afternoon with elected officials, education stakeholders and the community. He will conclude the day with a one-and-half-hour interview with the Hamilton County Board of Education.

The board named Kelly interim superintendent 15 months ago, and he was the only internal candidate to apply for the position. In October school board members Kathy Lennon, Joe Galloway and David Testerman advocated for hiring Kelly for the permanent position, but the board ultimately voted to conduct a search.

But school board members Rhonda Thurman, Joe Wingate, Tiffanie Robinson and Joe Smith have voiced support of finding a leader that’s outside of the district.

Earlier this week the board interviewed Arthur Wayne Johnson, Stuart Greenberg, Timothy Gadson III and Bryan Johnson.
