The push for Chattanooga to provide tax incentives toward a grocery store in the inner city continues, City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem told members of the Unity Group on Sunday.

Hakeem presented a strategy to try to achieve the incentives to more than a dozen Unity Group members at Eastdale Village Community United Methodist Church on Sunday night.

Hakeem wants the city to provide tax incentives to Chaudry S. Ali, owner of S&L Enterprises Inc., to operate a full-service grocery store on the corner of Dodson Avenue and Glass Street.

City officials so far haven’t said yes, but Hakeem said he expects community leaders to make a plea to the City Council within two weeks. He encouraged neighbors to attend the council committee meeting ahead of the presentation at City Council.

Ali, who also owns Rogers Super Market on East Main Street, bought the old Sunny Town Supermarket in April for $105,000 from Artwil & Co., according to the Hamilton County Register of Deeds.
