No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. And no, it’s not 1999. But the hit statement jewelry piece from the decade of grunge is back – with a new twist, of course.

From the Oscars to music videos like Beyonce’s Formation, or even down the hall in your office, it’s practically impossible to deny that chokers are having another moment. This time around, though, the options extend far beyond pieces of string that look like cut-up clothing or a tribal tattoo design.

Today’s chokers are elegant and make exquisitely original statement pieces, with a wide array of options available for every aesthetic. So while a choker to top off your holiday look might be found as easily as a stray piece of velvet to tie around your neck, jewelry designers have taken the trend many steps further.

If the 90’s grunge reference concerns you, don’t worry. Historically, women of wealth and power such as Anne Boleyn and Queen Victoria were frequently portrayed wearing such pieces. Well-known artist Edgar Degas even painted some of his famed dancers, such as the Dancer on Stage with a Bouquet, sporting the embellishment.

So whether you decide to channel your inner 1800’s British monarch or our present-day Queen Bey, rest assured you’ll be in excellent company.
