Rick Honeycutt’s annual charity golf tournament at Battlfield Golf Club again raised some money and drew some of baseball’s familiar names to the event Tuesday.
Among them was Fredi Gonzalez, the new Atlanta Braves manager who will take the job held for the last two decades by Bobby Cox.
“It’s one of the top jobs in baseball. Great people, great organization and I’d been there before,” said Gonzalez, who was the Braves’ third-base coach before leaving to manage the Florida Marlins. “I’ve kept a lot of the guys coaching-wise, and I know it’s only been two weeks since the season ended, but I’m ready to get going.”
Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell joined Gonzalez, and McDowell said don’t count out the San Francisco Giants against the favored Texas Rangers in the World Series, which starts Wednesday.
