Different wars, many evils

As we enter 2010, we sadly are a people, a nation and a world without peace.

We are thankful we are not engaged in a huge conflagration such as World War II, or even the smaller but lengthy and tragic Korean War or Vietnam War. But we are “at war.”

“Ordinary” wars involving Americans rage in Iraq and Afghanistan, with almost daily casualties. They involve anonymous enemies, on no real “fronts” or “battle lines” — and lack specific prospects for “victory.”

And there is war in other forms, with terrorists killing innocent people indiscriminately in random places. Along with our soldiers, American civilians have been killed in Afghanistan. Hostages are taken. Bombs go off. We are reminded that 137 journalists were killed last year while reporting the bad news.

Does anyone doubt that there are many evil people with evil aims inflicting evils in varied forms upon many innocent people? We must never surrender.
