Board OKs fix for drainage problem

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Solving an unexpected drainage problem in front of Cleveland High School’s expansion project will add $12,000 to the cost, officials said.

For weeks, the city school board’s site committee has wrestled with how to avoid an unsightly retention pond above ground in front of the high school’s new $8 million Max R. Carroll Science Wing. The answer is a series of underground drainage pipes, creating a below-ground retention system, the board decided.

The potential aesthetics problem was pointed out recently by Gene Bishop, hired by the board to be the project watchdog. It would have been a really big, ugly pond in the most-public spot on campus, Mr. Bishop said.

The problem was discussed with architects, including why it was not anticipated in the first place.

On Monday, the board approved the drainage pipe fix.
