A man in Polk County opened fire on a home on Ladd Springs Road while a woman and a 7-year-old girl were inside, then wielded a handgun and fought police who later tried to arrest him, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman was shot twice and the girl escaped without injury, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded to the Ladd Springs Road home in Old Fort about 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 13 after a 911 caller told dispatchers someone was standing in the yard and firing into the home, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
Shortly after that phone call, a second person called 911 and said that the suspect, Tony Day, was at their home and had confessed to the shooting. Days’ age was not immediately available.
Deputies then went to Days’ home on Sand Mountain Road and made contact with Day. He was armed with a handgun, but Sheriff Steve Ross was able to gain control of the weapon after a short struggle.
Day was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and three counts of felony reckless endangerment. He was booked into the Polk County Justice Center.
