While most of us enjoy a generally “safe” society, it is shocking how much wanton violence threatens lives and safety.
Locally, there are the usual crimes of personal attacks — many involving people who know each other, as well as random assaults among strangers. And in addition to the lamentable crimes of violence, there are many incidents of robbery and burglary. And of course, there are tragic accidents that cause death or injury.
Such things happen almost daily in our own community. But look at the rest of our troubled world. On just one page of Tuesday’s Times Free Press, for example, there were these headlines:
• “Bomb defused in Italy embassy”
• “Suicide bomber kills 3 in Afghanistan”
• “Police arrest 6 in central Nigeria violence”
• “Twin suicide blasts kill 9 in Iraq”
And these are only random samples.
At home, and abroad, we deplore violence that victimizes people so randomly, so senselessly and so tragically.
