Smash Art at CDM

What can you make out of computer keys and hairdryer parts?

The short answer is “Smash Art,” a workshop on “the lost art of tinkering” that shows how to transform electronics into repurposed objects, toys and robotics.

The two-hour workshop is scheduled 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Creative Discovery Museum, 321 Chestnut St. (with a repeat on July 14). The session is held in partnership with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Fine Arts Department. Materials will be provided.

One art student and one engineering student from UTC will guide children and adults with step-by-step directions on how to transform electronics into repurposed objects or art. The collaboration is designed to show how art and technology can be combined, such as a television screen that becomes an Etch-A-Sketch.

“Smash Art promotes a level of curiosity inside us all about how things work and how to recycle parts into something new,” said Liza Blair, the museum’s arts manager. “This is a chance for kids to see how art and technology work together, whether it’s through design principles, mechanics, form or structure.”

Smash Art is included in paid admission to the museum ($11.95). Reservations are not required. For more information, visit www.cdmfun.org or call 648-6069.
