Kids can blast off into a galaxy far away this summer from the MACC, which is hosting a Bricks 4 Kidz space camp Monday-Friday, June 13-17 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Space camp is a new offering for 2016 from Bricks 4 Kidz Chattanooga, which offers educational classes for children based on principles of engineering and architecture using Legos, said Kelly MacBride, director of Bricks 4 Kidz Chattanooga.

Designed for ages 6-11, she said the camp will be split up into stations where participants will build different space-themed motorized models using Lego TechnicBRICKs, as well as stationary builds such as an astronaut and a Project Gemini Capsule.

“In addition to Lego builds, we’ll also be making crafts and playing fun games to break up the day, though many kids would be happy playing with Legos all day,” laughed MacBride.

The camp will develop skills such as problem solving and collaboration and the ability to follow instructions and use plans in 2-D to build 3-D models, she said. Since all the models are space-themed, MacBride said campers will also be talking and learning about space.

“They get to play while they’re learning, so it doesn’t feel like learning as much,” she said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The cost of the camp is $165, or $150 for MACC members. Campers will take home Star Wars-themed crafts and a custom mini-figure.

The MACC is at 809 Kentucky Ave. For more information or to register, contact MacBride at 567-5439 or kmacbride@bricks4kidz.com or visit signalmacc.org.
