Dems, media failing to see many positives

There are so many things happening in America in recent months that are so incredibly positive. The amazing and roaring economy certainly heads this list. Millions of Americans sense and feel the results of so many of those positives. The optimism barometer is surging upward. Thousands show up at every Trump rally to clap, shout and jump for joy to celebrate their new-found optimism.

But there is one group of influential Americans who absolutely will not stand for, nor participate in, this celebration of optimism. And they are the liberal media along with many Democrats in leadership. They choose to focus on total pessimism, total negativism and total unhappiness. They have now become nonstop critics, complainers and accusers. They spew their poisonous pessimism and daily vicious personal verbal assaults primarily at the president, his family and his supporters. They are very unhappy Americans despite being surrounded by so much that is positive and wonderful about our great country right now. Too bad they can’t choose to be happy and join the celebration. And, too bad that every day we all have to wade through their barrage of pessimistic, distorted garbage just to try to find a tidbit of accurate news reporting.

Civil War opinion was ‘fringe’ piece

The column on the Chattanooga Free Press page Aug. 16, by Roger Smith, shocked me. Our Chattanooga paper has had a history of publishing opinion pieces that for the most part express opposing views on subjects that inform readers. Yet, in this column, Smith provides a fringe perspective on America’s Civil War that is wrong, dangerous and insulting. What were the editors thinking when they printed a column that says that only a leftist political agenda would portray the Civil War ” not as a war fought against the over-reach of federal government but as a war fought by evil bigots whose only desire was to enslave African descendants”?

Holy smokes! Only a fringe group would assert that the issue of slavery was not at the core of the Civil War. Maybe this argument would not have surprised me on a white nationalistic webpage but in my hometown paper? Seems the editors are sending us a clear signal. Today’s Republicans are no longer the party of Lincoln.

Mitchell against corporate influence

Ever since the Citizens United ruling in 2010 that effectively allowed corporations to exert unlimited political influence through the use of donations, congressional representatives now seem to be more beholden to PACs than to their constituents.

I believe that despite the current level of political discord, we all might agree that corporations should not have louder voices than the people in our democracy.

I find it extremely important to support candidates who are willing to take a stand against this broken system. One candidate who understands the importance of this issue is Dr. Danielle Mitchell, who is running for the Tennessee Third Congressional District seat.

Exposing undue corporate influence in Tennessee’s elections is a major part of Dr. Mitchell’s platform. She is an advocate for overturning Citizens United and would support other measures that protect Tennesseans from the power of massive money coming from big businesses.
