CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Bradley County Fire and Rescue lost one of its station commanders in a fatal vehicle crash Wednesday evening.

Captain Wallace Varnell, 55, of the Lead Mine Valley Road station, was one of two victims killed in a crash that occurred on Georgetown Road, which is part of the State Route 60 corridor.

“He is pretty much irreplaceable,” said Chief Troy Maney of Varnell, who was a 22-year veteran of the department. “Wallace was a great person and would give the shirt off his back to help. He was an asset to his station, his district and the community. Bradley County’s loss is great.”

Authorities have not released the name of the other victim involved in the crash.

Tennessee Highway Patrol will issue any public statements concerning the accident, said officials with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.
