How to help moms not need abortions
January was the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion while allowing some level of regulation when there is compelling interest. The Los Angeles Times, on The Chattanooga Times side (Jan. 3), claims this is “settled.” But columns on Jan. 8 and Jan. 24 and a right-side editorial Jan. 25 show abortion law is hardly “settled.” Indeed, The New York Times on Jan. 24 tells “How To Prepare” to fight the decision’s demise because it is so at risk.
What is missing in this 46-year-old debate is real discourse on just what is being killed in an abortion. A human being (pro-life position) or a blob of tissue that becomes a human being at birth (pro-abortion position). Science and logic say it is a human being from conception. It is viable from conception in the womb if we don’t kill it. And it is viable outside the womb earlier and earlier with advancing technology.
The real debate should be how can we help mothers not need to resort to abortion. And how can we help all human beings grow up just like you and I were allowed to grow up.
