At the age of 15, having an agent, making a record and getting a gig at Columbia Records would be pipe dreams for most kids. However, for Grace Brody, a rising sophomore at Girls Preparatory School, all of those dreams could quickly become her reality.
After receiving the opportunity to record an EP at local studio Sound Resources as a gift for her 15th birthday, she posted some of the tracks online.
The EP, titled “Parental Advisory,” is due out this month, shortly before her one-week job shadowing opportunity with the recording company. She said she will learn as much as she can in that one week while attending promotion meetings about the advertisement of the music, working with producers and artists and observing Columbia management as it navigates the world of the music industry.
“I’ve always had this dream of having people know my music,” said Grace. “He [a executive at Columbia Records] had heard my music and said that I had real talent, and thought I should get the opportunity to experience this.”
Despite being an upcoming sophomore, Grace said she’s already looked at several colleges for the future, and she’s planning on pursuing a double-major in music and business management.
While she has been playing and writing music since she was a child, she said, the process of becoming a recognizable talent started last year when she earned a role in a short film, “Musical Hearts,” shot in Atlanta. She wrote and performed music for the film, which had successful runs in the Atlanta short-film circuit. Those successes, she said, led her to want to formally record her music.
“The first time I stepped into the studio to record, it was like I was home,” said Grace. “All my life I’ve wanted to make music, and to be in a place that was all music, it was amazing.”
The recording process took several months, beginning in February. The sound mastering by Steve Babb and Fred Schendel at Sound Resources made all the difference, she said, and she gave full credit to them for making the record the best it could be.
“She’s been allowed such a wonderful opportunity, but it makes me a little nervous because now I have to keep her grounded,” laughed Grace’s mom Donna. ” I’m just extremely proud that she’s following her dreams.”
