Wintertime Fun

One of my favorite magnets adorning my fridge – little reminders of the life I’ve lived posted in the most mundane of places – is one I got in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

A friend and I had been invited to go snowboarding for this article. Just before the start of the winter resort town’s busy season, we made the four-plus-hour trek and snapped into snowboards for the first time. It remains one of my favorite trips, both because we had the town to ourselves and because snowboarding is so much fun.

In our first story below, author Emily Crisman suggests a new wintertime tradition: driving to Cashiers, North Carolina, to cut down your own Christmas tree. It also offers the opportunity to try snowboarding at Sapphire Valley Ski Resort, which is 45 minutes closer than Beech Mountain.
