A retired Chattanooga police sergeant died following a Wednesday evening crash, according to a Police Department news release.

Officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles at the 6000 block of Shallowford Road near Highway 153 around 6:40 p.m. and found an unresponsive occupant of one of the vehicles. The occupant, later identified as Walter Maples, 93, had sustained life-threatening injuries after a vehicle pulled out of the post office parking lot and turned east into the pathway of another vehicle going west on Shallowford Road, the release states.

Maples was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. All other occupants of the vehicles were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
