A portrait of former U.S. District Court Judge Harry S. “Sandy” Mattice Jr. was unveiled Friday in the courtroom where Mattice served as both a federal prosecutor and federal judge before retiring from the bench last September.

The portrait was painted by Jamie Lee McMahan, who maintains a studio in Memphis and has painted U.S. senators, governors, mayors, judges, and university presidents, including U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor; the prizewinning author of Roots, Alex Haley; and Harry Belafonte.

The portrait of Mattice will be displayed at the Joel Solomon Federal office building along with others portraits of former federal judges who have served in Chattanooga.
