Several Hamilton County residents have experienced mail thefts even after the holiday season, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

The seemingly random thefts seem to be targeting mainly large subdivisions. The thefts are generally happening in the evening and throughout the night and typically involve mail or packages left overnight in residents’ mailboxes.

Last month, shortly before Christmas, two people were arrested after several reports of mail theft in the Ooltewah area. Before the holiday season began, Chattanooga police urged citizens to drop off their mail inside post offices instead of drop boxes after several of those were targeted by thieves who were reportedly stealing checks.

As local law enforcement continues to search for the thieves, here are some safety tips to reduce the chances of stolen mail and packages:

— Never leave mail or packages in your mailbox during the night.

— Always pick up your mail as soon as possible.

— Never send cash in the mail.

— Schedule package deliveries for when you are home.

— Have a designated family member, friend or neighbor available to pick up or secure large packages delivered to your porch or mailbox.

— Consider installing cameras that cover your mailbox location and/or a doorbell camera on your porch.

— Check your package tracking information routinely to know when your deliveries will occur.

— If you change your address, immediately notify your post office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.

— Report all suspected mail theft or suspicious activity to your local law enforcement and postal inspector.

— For U.S. Postal Service items, use the free Informed Delivery Service, which can provide daily emails previewing what packages you are scheduled to receive as well as images of incoming letter-sized mail. That service also allows you to see if you are missing any of your mail. You can also schedule when you would like to receive certain packages to help ensure you or someone you trust is available to accept the package.
