The Hamilton County school board will vote Thursday whether to approve a bid for the construction of a new $1.7 million multipurpose building at Rivermont Elementary — one of six schools targeted for closure in the facilities plan released last month.

The two-phase, seven-year plan calls for campus closures and renovations in the interest of lowering maintenance costs by having fewer buildings.

Among other recommendations, the plan proposes building a new elementary school on the current DuPont Elementary site in Hixson and consolidating three out of four smaller schools in the area — Alpine Crest, DuPont, Hixson and Rivermont — onto one larger campus.

At last week’s facilities committee meeting, school board members differed on whether to invest in buildings that might be closed in the future.
