The sheriff in Grundy County will face a formal decertification hearing before the state’s police training commission stemming from an ongoing investigation into officer training problems at his department and the panel’s dissatisfaction with his efforts to resolve them.
Members of the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission voted Friday to hold the hearing to consider decertifying Grundy County Sheriff Heath Gunter as a law enforcement officer sometime after the first of the year.
Gunter didn’t return a cellphone message seeking comment.
On Friday, Gunter told the commission his school resource officers and deputies were certified, but commissioners said there were discrepancies between Gunter’s status reports and findings from commission investigator Bruce Cantrelle.
