APISON — Sporting a cane and crisp gray suit, Steve Cox approached the Hullander Farm barn, raring to sing.
“I love that old music,” he said.
It was not, Cox said, like that “seven-11” music which abounds in churches today — contemporary songs in which, he said with a smile, they sing seven words 11 times.
Cox said he was there Sunday, preparing to join the hundred-plus others already inside the barn, at the invitation of Bill Hullander, the Hamilton County trustee, who would be the master of ceremonies for the evening’s musical program.
That program was rooted in the “Church Hymnal,” the mid-20th century hardcover commonly known as the red back hymnal, which is loaded with classics of the Southern gospel tradition.
