Legislators return, just like cicadas and more letters to the editors

Legislators return, just like cicadas

The current issue of the Hamilton County Herald is devoted in large part to the cicada phenomenon. Included is a piece by Nashville resident Joe Rogers, a former editor of The New York Times. Rogers compares cicadas with our state legislators. He concludes that while arguably our legislators may be more attractive, cicadas probably are more beneficial. According to Rogers, cicadas are harmless, they aerate the ground and are a food source for songbirds, other creatures and even some humans, while in the last session, the legislators’ chief accomplishments were to dole out large tax breaks to corporations, to authorize teachers to carry firearms in school rooms and to bar first cousins from marrying.

Oh, well, cicadas will be back underground in a few more weeks. The legislature will be back in session later this year.
