Major League Baseball’s three-day amateur draft for 2024 concluded on Tuesday, with the 30 teams blazing through 300 picks in less than 3 1/2 hours.
There were some familiar last names selected on the final day, which consisted of rounds 11 through 20.
The Los Angeles Angels took outfielder Lucas Ramirez in the 17th round. He is the son of Manny Ramirez, a 12-time MLB All-Star. The Boston Red Sox selected D’Angelo Ortiz in the 19th round. He is the son of National Baseball Hall of Fame slugger David Ortiz, also known as “Big Papi,” who spent the final 14 of his 20 MLB seasons with that franchise.
“We just felt like it was a good add to the organization,” said Devin Pearson, the director of amateur scouting for the Red Sox. “It’s a plus that his dad is David Ortiz, but we drafted him as a prospect.”
In the 20th round, the Toronto Blue Jays took University of Southern California shortstop Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek. His father is Mark Grudzielanek, who spent a decade and a half in the majors and was an All-Star in 1996.
