Amid a shortfall of revenue from thousands of unpaid parking citations, the Chattanooga Parking Authority is preparing over the next few months to begin booting vehicles with multiple parking violations.

According to the latest data from the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, which operates the parking authority, more than 15,000 parking tickets remain unpaid from 2023, accumulating a revenue shortfall of more than $200,000.

While CARTA per city code can boot a vehicle with three unpaid citations, CEO Charles Frazier, who started in January, said in an interview it does not do so.

That will change over the next few months, he said, as CARTA prepares a program to enforce parking violations.

“That is a weakness in my opinion,” Frazier said, referring to the lack of parking enforcement. The “program will give CARTA the ability to begin booting vehicles for people that are not paying their fines.”
