For a while, the only question was which side of the ball would be his future.
At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Baylor School senior Cam Sparks has the frame and athleticism to bring interest from numerous Football Bowl Subdivision coaching staffs, although there was uncertainty over whether he projected to be a receiver or a safety at the next level. Over the past two seasons, he has been a proven playmaker on both offense and defense for the Red Raiders, who won the TSSAA Division II-AAA state championship in 2022 and returned to the BlueCross Bowl title game last year.
Although his size opens the door to the possibility of a future at receiver, tight end, safety or even linebacker (depending on whether he maintains a slender build or adds bulk to his frame at the next level), the consensus has become that Sparks needs the ball in his hands as much as possible — and so it is the offensive coordinators on the teams he considers finalists for his college commitment who will be most happy.
“Cam is a great athlete out in space with the ball in his hands,” third-year Baylor coach Erik Kimrey said. “When I got here and saw how athletic he was, I said: ‘That’s a dude. He’s playing offense.'”
Rated the state’s top overall prospect by Rivals.com, No. 2 by ESPN.com and No. 15 by On3.com, Sparks is No. 5 on this year’s Times Free Press Dynamite Dozen list of the Chattanooga area’s top recruits.
