Vice President Kamala Harris’ entry into the presidential race set off a new wave of Hamilton County campaign contributors.
In the 10 days following Harris’ announcement on July 21 that she would be running for president after the withdrawal of President Joe Biden, the Harris campaign received $86,600 from Hamilton County donors, according to a review of the latest available Federal Election Commission data by the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
In the same 10-day period, former President Donald Trump received $1,300 from Hamilton County donors.
Harris’ 66-to-1 edge over Trump in dollars raised in Hamilton County was quite a turnaround from when Biden was still leading the Democratic ticket. From May 20 to July 20, Hamilton County contributors gave $58,700 to Biden’s reelection effort, compared to $150,800 sent to the Republican nominee.
Glenwood resident Ryan Eastwick said he never made a political donation before Harris announced her 2024 presidential campaign. Eastwick donated $245 to the Harris campaign during the first 10 days.
