We’re officially halfway through the TSSAA football regular season — which means a third of the way through the season overall when you factor in the number of weeks teams that reach the BlueCross Bowl state championship games at Finley Stadium in early December will have played by then — and a few things have become clear.
Of course, several scenarios still remain as clear as the mud that will be caked on players’ uniforms this weekend due to the soggy field conditions, but before this season’s storylines all crystalize, here are a few things we do know for certain.
— Few coaches have gotten more out of less in their career than Polk County’s Derrick Davis, who has guided the program to the playoffs in 18 of the 22 seasons he has been in charge at his alma mater.
After a rare disappointing finish last year, Davis has the Wildcats back in contention for a possible Region 2-2A championship.
Coming off last week’s win over state-ranked Oneida, Polk has this week off to prepare for the stretch run and stands 2-0 in the region with a road trip to winless Wartburg Central coming next week. If the Wildcats pick up another region win there, then home games against Bledsoe County and York Institute will determine the top two finishers in the region, with both hosting in the first round of the playoffs.
