We hope Hamilton County commissioners agree unanimously next week on a gracious timeline set forth to replace the county attorney at the end of his contract in June.

Rheubin Taylor, 76, has been county attorney since 1993 after serving as an elected Democratic county commissioner for 15 years.

Much has changed in the last 31 years. When the county attorney was appointed, many county offices were held by Democrats. Today, all county constitutional offices are held by Republicans; the county mayor, Weston Wamp, is a Republican; and Republicans hold eight of the 11 seats on the commission.

It’s time to turn the page.

Wamp, in a resolution that will be heard Wednesday and voted on next week, has suggested Taylor could stay on as a consultant for six months beyond the end of his contract, and that his pick for the next county attorney, Janie Parks Varnell, would begin work in January to effect a smooth transition.
