Turn on CNN between now and Tuesday, and you’re sure to see some election-related news ticker with this text at the top: “America’s Choice 2024.”
In 2004, when George W. Bush ran against John Kerry or when, in 2012, when Barack Obama campaigned against Mitt Romney, those elections were indeed, as CNN puts it, a choice for Americans to make. It’s a normal part of civic life in this country, of course, to elect a president every four years.
But this is not a normal election with normal stakes. This is not an election that should be described as a choice between two relatively typical candidates.
No, this is a mandate for the American people, once and for all, to reject Donald Trump, a man who a growing number of people – including his own top aides when he was president as well as presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris – are calling a fascist.
This may seem hyperbolic and uncalled for. It may seem like some partisan talking point to drum up fear, but it is true. Donald Trump is a fascist. We should fear what this man will do if at the helm of this country for another term.
