Electric performance

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Third-graders at Michigan Avenue Elementary School have studied for weeks about energy and the importance of using it wisely.

Nearly 100 of those students also got the message this week from a fictional light bulb store owner, secretly known as “Nikki Neutron,” who battles the evil, energy-wasting Dragonfly, who is trying to waste all the energy in town.

The theatrical tale — billed as the “Energized Guys Daylight Savings Crime” — got both laughs and applause from the children gathered in the school gym.

During the 25-minute play, actresses Koya Frye and Vanessa Miller from the Minnesota-based National Theater for Children explained not only what makes electricity but how it can be saved by turning off appliances when they’re not in use and installing more fuel-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.

True to their name, the Energized Guys made the topic of energy conservation exciting for the children, according to one of their teachers, Faye Burns.
