A judge this week handed down a $1.8 million judgment in a yearslong interstate legal dispute between Walker County’s wastewater authority and the city of Chattanooga.
U.S. District Judge Katherine Crytzer concluded that Walker County’s wastewater authority, in Georgia, owes Chattanooga just over $1.8 million in unpaid charges for treating large portions of the county’s raw sewage at Chattanooga’s Moccasin Bend Wastewater Treatment Plant.
“We’re glad to see it,” Chattanooga City Attorney Phil Noblett said by phone of the summary judgment, which the city has been pushing for since November 2021.
In addition to the unpaid charges, the judge ordered the Walker County sewer authority to pay interest on those charges for the pre-judgment period.
The judgment also authorizes Chattanooga to immediately terminate its interconnection with the neighboring sewer authority.
