Four years ago Slate Smith began his high school lacrosse career by winning a TSLA state championship with Boyd Buchanan.
Now, the senior playmaker for the Buccaneers, who shines on the attack and with his aggressive defense, is looking to make the first TSSAA lacrosse season a special one with his teammates.
Monday marked the first official day of the spring sports season for six sports in Tennessee — baseball, lacrosse, boys soccer, softball, tennis and track — though a couple of them began last week.
Smith was a part of history as he assisted classmate Ethan Lane for the first goal scored in TSSAA history of the sport in last Monday’s 23-0 season-opening home shutout of Walker Valley. Smith showcased how dynamic he can be as he scored six goals and added nine assists in the win while showcasing his expertise on the defensive end with an ice pick check to help his team get the ball back.
Division II-A’s Boyd Buchanan is one of six local boys teams that will compete in the inaugural TSSAA season along with Baylor and McCallie in Division II-AA and Signal Mountain, Soddy Daisy and Walker Valley in Class A.
