After delaying votes on the project, city and county officials will hear more about a planned $1 billion expansion by battery materials maker Novonix during a meeting Monday at the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.

Votes on a $50 million tax incentive were postponed earlier this year following questions about layoffs at the company. The Chattanooga City Council and Hamilton County Commission are expected to take up the 15-year tax break Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Members of the two panels will meet at 4 p.m. Monday at the chamber’s offices at 811 Broad St.

The boards will consider a “payment in lieu of taxes” agreement — also called a PILOT — with Novonix. The deal would essentially reduce the company’s property tax payments for 15 years. Novonix would still be obligated to pay taxes benefiting the school system.

City council Chair Chip Henderson of Lookout Valley said he wants to know the project will still receive funding from the federal government, which is an essential part of the expansion.
