The Hamilton County Commission seemed to play the authoritative parent Wednesday, offering only a “because I said so” as to why it tabled Mayor Weston Wamp’s proposal to enshrine a two-term limit to the county executive’s job.
Nobody, after all, save District 11 Commissioner Joe Graham, had out and out said he didn’t like the idea or wouldn’t vote for it.
“On the surface,” District 7 Commissioner Lee Helton said, “I support term limits. I think it’s probably a good thing for some offices to have them. However, I think there are some items that are not clear [with] this resolution. Just for the sake of more clarity, because this will fundamentally change county government and how people will serve, I would like to put this item on the table.”
Wamp had said last week he hoped commissioners would approve the resolution, which then could be passed as a private act in the legislature and then affirmed by a county referendum, ostensibly during the 2026 county general election.
But whatever was unclear to Helton remains unclear. And why it would “fundamentally change county government” was not explained.
