Yes, Valentine’s Day is a day for love — and also a day for chocolate. Actually, signs of Cupid have been showing up since the day after Christmas. It seems like Valentine’s gets earlier and earlier every year with the big-box stores putting out all of those heart-shaped boxes of chocolates that have been waiting in a warehouse somewhere.

For chocoholics, myself included, there’s really nothing better than a chocolate creation made from scratch to show how much you love your partner and your children. So when I discovered this recipe for gooey chocolate cookies among my mother’s recipes — stored in a small green metal file box filled with recipes on index cards in her familiar handwriting — tears came to my eyes as I remembered making them with her.

I can’t remember if we made them for Valentine’s Day only. Sometimes when that chocolate attack hit, we made them just because. I do remember, though, how delicious they were and couldn’t wait to gather the ingredients to make them again.

Make them today, and they’ll stay good for at least a week if stored in an airtight container, Or, as I’ve done several times, make the dough ahead of time and freeze it. When you thaw it out, form it into balls, roll them in powdered sugar and bake.
