CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — This is the 14th season Mike Dunfee has called the shots from the Gordon Lee High School baseball dugout and, in his own words, it’s been one of his most enjoyable.

Winning is always fun and the Trojans have done plenty of that, entering Friday’s GHSA Class A Division I playoff series against Brantley County at 29-1 and seeded No. 1 in the 32-team public school-only bracket.

It’s more than the W’s, though, for the two-time state championship-winning coach. After going a disappointing 17-14 a year ago, the Trojans returned only four seniors this season, so expectations were not at the usual standard.

However, returning talent — young and old — mixed with newcomers to form one of the state’s most well-rounded small-school squads. The Trojans have outscored their opponents 305-49 and went 9-0 against higher-classification teams.

Not all the newcomers were athletes, or at least current athletes.
