Shaquita Ruiz stood in front of her pre-kindergarten class at Hardy Elementary and asked students to identify the beginning sound of the word “howl.”

The sound of huffing filled the classroom as the students sounded out the letter “h.” Then, she asked if anyone could tell her something else that began with that sound.

Hands shot up from where the students were sitting criss-cross applesauce on the rug.

“Hat,” one student said. Another chimed in with “house.”

Later on in their morning meeting, Ruiz had students break up the sounds in the word “go.”
