Preservation is about saving beautiful and irreplaceable things, according to Todd Morgan.

“We’re talking about more than just buildings,” Morgan, the director of Preserve Chattanooga, told members of the Friends of Hixson at a Wednesday meeting. “We’re talking about environmental things, cultural things, even psychological things. Absolutely economic — this sort of preservation can have a huge and powerful economic impact in a community.”

Preserve Chattanooga — which consists of Morgan and one recently added part-time employee — works to track and save historic sites that hold the city’s history. Under its previous name, Cornerstone, the organization focused mainly on downtown Chattanooga, but Morgan said it’s now expanded its reach.

“People want to come to Chattanooga, they want to go to Charleston, they want to go to Savannah,” Morgan said. “They want to go to places and connect with the culture and history that’s unique to that place.”
