Spending the past 36 years coaching high school softball between East Hamilton, Gordon Lee and Ooltewah, Norma Nelson has made a profound impact on the lives of countless young ladies.

Nelson’s attention to detail, leadership, mentorship and knowledge of the game has also contributed to seven state championships, which includes four as an assistant at Gordon Lee and three at Ooltewah, with her first two coming as an assistant and one as head coach in 2008.

On Monday evening, East Hamilton’s legendary head coach was surprised and showered in celebration after earning her 900th career win, opening the District 6-4A tournament at Warner Park with a 15-4 decision over Howard.

“I have been real fortunate to have great kids, parents and admin,” said Nelson, whose team improved to 19-9 overall this season. “My dad (Raymond) was a single dad for a long time and he wasn’t a softball person, but he took me and supported me in this sport. He even has a state ring from when Ooltewah won it. I got him one. He is just very special and these kids are very special. I don’t have kids, so I just love all of them.

“I have been fortunate to have lots of people who have been there for me.”
