Scopes Trial events

The Tennessee State Museum in Nashville has opened a temporary exhibit, “Eight Days in Dayton: 100 Years of the Scopes Trial,” to mark the centennial of the landmark legal case. Known formally as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, the trial was a challenge to the Butler Act, a law that made the teaching of human evolution in Tennessee schools illegal. The trial was dubbed “the trial of the century” at the time, with noted attorney Clarence Darrow representing Tennessee schoolteacher John Scopes. Another noted attorney and three-time presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan, argued the prosecution for the state. Jury selection began on July 10, 1925, and the trial ran July 13-21. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100. The decision was eventually appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court, and the verdict was overturned on a technicality. The trial was a massive national media event with reporters pouring into Dayton from all over the country. The Nashville museum exhibit, which includes artifacts and a significant collection of original press photographs, will be on view through Oct. 12. Dayton also has a Scopes Trial Museum in the basement of the Rhea County Courthouse. The annual reenactment of the trial, “Destiny in Dayton,” will take place over two weekends, July 11-12 and 18-19, and a symposium focused on scholarly research is scheduled July 16-17. Get ticket details, and learn more about the Dayton museum, at rheaheritage.com. Learn more about the Nashville exhibit at tnmuseum.org.
